Nepal can be a practical overseas-study option for Indian medical aspirants because of its proximity and familiar regional setting. But the quality and suitability of your education depend on the exact college, teaching hospital, course structure, cost and licensing pathway—not the country label alone.

MBBS means Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) publishes a five-and-a-half-year programme: two pre-clinical years, two-and-a-half clinical years and one year of compulsory rotating residential internship. That is not the same as an automatic licence to practise in India. [4] [7]

Qualification and documents	Confirm equivalence, authentic academic records and any university-specific document conditions. Do not assume a pending-result exception or a guaranteed direct admission route.

NEET-qualified does not automatically mean eligible for every MEC route. A qualifying Indian category result below the MEC Subcategory II threshold cannot simply be treated as meeting Nepal’s separate 50th-percentile condition. A three-year Indian validity rule also does not waive MEC’s recent-exam requirement.

Separate registration calendars: Subcategory I has its own application notices, including an August extension. The later 6 November Subcategory II deadline must not be applied to it. Recheck the official portal for your exact category. Nepal time is 15 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time. [16]

The programme is not simply classroom study. It should build biomedical knowledge, clinical reasoning, communication, ethics and practical competence through supervised training. Ask about patient volume, supervision, clinical language and assessment—not just hospital bed counts.

Internship in Nepal

One year of compulsory rotating residential internship in the KUSMS structure.

Verify rotations, supervision, permissions, location and the completion certificate.
Do not assume a shortened, transferred or split-country arrangement meets Indian requirements.
Practical activities must be supervised and within authorised student/intern scope.

The pathway after the degree

Not another semester of the Nepal MBBS course.

Check the applicable Indian screening/exit-test, internship and registration requirements.
Keep curriculum, transcripts, attendance, travel and clinical/internship evidence.
A Nepal degree or an exam pass alone does not automatically confer an unrestricted right to practise.

English teaching does not remove every language barrier. Patient communication and local clinical work can require additional language skills. Ask how the college supports this and how international students participate in hands-on training.

Check the exact course, not a blanket approval label.

For the applicable FMGL 2021 cohort, the requirements include at least 54 months of medical education plus a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, English instruction, required subjects and the local registration/licensing condition at par with citizens of the awarding country. Same-institution/country and completion-time conditions also matter. [7]

The Indian pathway includes the mandated test and, for the applicable cohort, a separate supervised internship of at least 12 months in India, followed by the required registration process. A 5½-year course title alone does not prove full compliance. [7] [9]

FMGE, NExT and older cohorts: NBEMS still publishes FMGE information at review. Do not assume universal replacement by NExT or predict the rules at future graduation. Earlier admissions, transfers and pandemic/war-disrupted online periods need cohort-specific assessment. The 8 June 2026 NMC FAQ is not a general waiver for new applicants. [8] [9]

Use recent NBEMS institute-wise results with the year and candidate numbers when researching outcomes. Do not present old embassy tables or a small-sample pass rate as a current ranking or guarantee. [9]

Keep application identity and travel identity separate

Documents to prepare before applying.

Aadhaar warning: MEC’s reviewed notice permits an E-Aadhaar identity option for its process. The Embassy’s India–Nepal air-travel guidance, however, does not accept Aadhaar as a travel document. An ID accepted for an application is not automatically an ID accepted for boarding or entry. [1] [12]

Use your own application account, verify every uploaded document and retain the confirmation page. Never submit altered marksheets, false financial records or another person’s identity documents.

Nearer does not mean document-free or risk-free

Travel, accommodation & student life in Nepal.

Indian nationals benefit from visa-free entry to Nepal under the reviewed entry guidance, but admission documents, institutional formalities and valid identity still matter. Do not automatically apply the same rule to OCI holders travelling on foreign passports or to other nationalities; confirm their own requirements. [13]

For Indian nationals travelling by air between India and Nepal, the Embassy lists a valid Indian passport or original photograph-bearing voter ID issued by the Election Commission of India. It excludes downloaded voter ID, Aadhaar, PAN and driving licence as travel documents. Confirm current airline/authority requirements for your particular traveller and route. [12]

Ask about room occupancy, food, hygiene, water, internet, heating/cooling, security and internship-period accommodation.

Plan real travel time

Compare campus-to-airport or border connections, seasonal disruption, family visits and an emergency travel reserve.

How long is MBBS in Nepal?

KUSMS publishes a 5½-year programme: two years pre-clinical, 2½ years clinical and one year compulsory rotating residential internship. Confirm the exact university course; Indian registration steps may add time after the degree. [4]

Is admission based on NEET only?

No. Covered Indian/OCI applicants need NEET for the Indian framework, while MEC has separate foreign-entry routes and selection conditions. Subcategory II is conditional and is not an unrestricted direct-admission shortcut. [1] [6]

What marks does MEC specify for foreign applicants?

The 2027 call states Grade 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and minimum 50% aggregate in total marks or CGPA 2.4 or equivalent. Verify grading interpretation and the separate Indian requirements. [1]

Does any NEET qualifying score satisfy Subcategory II?

Not automatically. MEC specifies the required recent national medical entrance result at a minimum 50th percentile, or 50% if the result uses a percentage system, for residual seats. An Indian category qualifying result below that threshold does not automatically satisfy it. [1]

How long is NEET valid for foreign medical study?

NMC’s student-abroad guidance states three years from declaration of the result, subject to underlying conditions. This does not override MEC’s separate recent-exam requirement for Subcategory II. [6] [1]

What are the latest reviewed dates?

The published Subcategory II application deadline is extended to 6 November 2026. The Subcategory I MBBS exam is scheduled for 31 October 2026, 11 AM–2 PM Nepal time. They serve different purposes; recheck the current category-specific notices. [2] [3]

What are the current MBBS fees in Nepal?

Ask for a current college-specific foreign-student quote. KUSMS’s public MBBS page has a fee section explicitly labelled 2025 showing $75,000 total tuition in three $25,000 instalments; it should not be relabelled as a verified 2026–27 fee. Living and other costs need separate confirmation. [4]

Are INR and NPR interchangeable?

No. They are different currencies. Check the quote, conversion method and payment costs; the calculator requires an explicit INR-per-unit rate for non-INR tuition. It does not fetch live rates.

Are Nepal colleges automatically NMC- or WHO-approved?

No blanket approval should be inferred. India’s NMC does not endorse a foreign-college list, and WDOMS listing alone is not recognition or accreditation. Nepal Medical Council and India’s National Medical Commission are different authorities. [6] [10] [11]

Can I practise in India immediately after graduating?

No automatic right follows from the degree. Your cohort must meet the applicable examination, training, internship, licensing and registration conditions. Earlier cohorts and notified exceptions need separate assessment. [7] [8] [9]

Do Indian students need a visa or passport?

Indian nationals have visa-free entry under the reviewed entry guidance, but valid documents remain necessary. For air travel between India and Nepal, the Embassy lists a valid Indian passport or original Election Commission photo voter ID. College and MEC document rules are separate; foreign-passport holders must check their own rules. [12] [13]

Can Aadhaar be used for the flight because MEC accepts it?

No such inference is valid. The reviewed MEC notice has an E-Aadhaar identity option, but the Embassy’s air-travel guidance does not accept Aadhaar as the travel document. [1] [12]

Is English instruction enough for clinical work?

Do not assume it removes all communication barriers. Ask how patients and clinical teams communicate, what language support is provided, and how international students obtain supervised practical experience.

Does counseling or this checker guarantee a seat?
