The big picture
What is an MBA in Information Technology?
An MBA in Information Technology connects management fundamentals with the way organisations build, buy and use technology. It prepares you to translate business needs into digital products, better processes and well-managed IT services—not just write software.
A typical full-time programme runs for two years. Alongside finance, marketing, people management and strategy, you study information systems, analytics, project management and technology governance. Exact degree names matter: an MBA IT, MBA IT Business Management and an MBA with IT electives are related, but not identical. [1][4]

Know where you stand
MBA IT eligibility, without the guesswork.
Check the programme’s own admission policy rather than assuming every MBA uses the same cut-off. SCIT and SICSR publish the following graduation thresholds. [1][3]
- Recognised graduation: a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or Institution of National Importance.
- Minimum marks: 50% or equivalent grade; 45% for SC/ST applicants at these two featured institutes.
- Non-engineers can apply: the stated degree eligibility is not restricted to BTech or BCA graduates. Build your quantitative and IT fundamentals.
- Final-year candidates: SCIT permits applications, subject to achieving the required final marks and meeting its document requirements.
- Selection is separate: meeting the academic threshold does not guarantee a shortlist or admission.

Your application roadmap
How to get admission to MBA IT.
Start with a shortlist, then register for the test and each institute separately where required. CAT, XAT, NMAT, CMAT, MAT and SNAP are not interchangeable across colleges.
Choose the exact programme
Check degree title, specialisation, campus, approved mode, eligibility and the entrance test it actually accepts.
Register for the entrance test—and the institute
SCIT requires SNAP and programme registration. Paying only the exam fee does not complete the institute application. [1]
Prepare for the shortlist and interview
SCIT uses a group exercise and personal interview after SNAP shortlisting. Other institutes may add a writing task or different assessment. [1]
Review the offer before paying
Verify documents, the full fee schedule, refund policy, accommodation costs and the exact admission deadline through the institute.
These are official exam links to explore, not a claim that every MBA IT programme accepts all six tests.
The official portal lists registration closing on 22 September 2026. Check any subsequent notices before taking action. [6]
SCIT lists SNAP registration closing 25 November 2026 and institute registration closing 25 December 2026. Reconfirm on the official calendar. [1]
Documents to keep ready
Graduation mark sheets / equivalent-grade conversion, degree or provisional certificate, final-year undertaking where applicable, entrance scorecard, government ID, photographs and relevant category / work-experience documents. Follow the institute’s prescribed formats.
Plan the full investment
MBA IT fees: compare like for like.
There is no single national MBA IT fee. Here are two official 2026–28 academic-fee examples for Indian students, calculated by adding the four published instalments. These are examples—not a ranking or the cheapest-to-costliest range.
| Programme | Academic fee / year | 2-year academic total | Not included |
|---|---|---|---|
| SICSR, Pune MBA Information Technology [2] | ₹5,70,000 | ₹11,40,000 | ₹20,000 institute deposit; hostel, mess and other applicable costs |
| SCIT, Pune MBA IT Business Management [1] | ₹7,80,000 | ₹15,60,000 | ₹20,000 institute deposit; hostel, mess and other applicable costs |
SICSR: ₹2.85 lakh × 4 instalments. SCIT: ₹3.90 lakh × 4 instalments. Refundable deposits are not academic fees. Fees remain subject to institute updates.
Build your MBA budget
A planning tool, not an institute quotation. Edit living costs and extras to match your situation.
Academic fees + 24 × monthly living costs + extras. Default living costs and extras are illustrative, not official charges. Includes any deposits you enter; excludes loan interest and foregone earnings. Avoid counting hostel and meals twice.
Scholarships & education loans
Ask about merit-based or need-based support, renewal conditions and the refund policy. SCIT publishes semester-topper scholarships; awards are conditional, not automatic. Treat loan interest as an additional cost and compare lender terms. [1]
Start with programme fit
MBA IT colleges worth exploring.
Start with verified programme names, not a generic “top MBA colleges” list. These two focused examples have official course and fee pages you can inspect. No ranking or admission partnership is implied.

What you will learn
A modern MBA IT syllabus.
The management core still matters. Stronger programmes connect it with analytics, enterprise systems, information security and digital strategy. SCIT’s published curriculum includes Generative AI Tools, Artificial Intelligence in Business, IT Consulting and Data Visualisation and Storytelling. [1]
The map below is an indicative learning journey, combining the original guide’s core subjects with current programme themes. It is not a verbatim syllabus or a promise that every college teaches each topic in the same semester.
Semester 1 · Management + IT foundations
- Business statistics & managerial economics
- Accounting and marketing fundamentals
- Organisational behaviour & communication

Electives to look for
Request the intake-specific programme structure, elective prerequisites and internship requirements before accepting an offer.
Beyond the degree
Build skills you can demonstrate.
Choose projects that prove you can connect technology decisions to customers, costs and risk. The following are preparation recommendations—not mandatory admission requirements or guaranteed placement skills.
AI & analytical literacy
Use SQL, spreadsheets and BI tools; evaluate AI output, limitations and business value.
Cybersecurity & governance
Understand access controls, risk registers, privacy and why governance matters.
Product & delivery thinking
Practise requirements discovery, prioritisation, Agile concepts and stakeholder communication.
Business storytelling
Turn analysis into an investment case, a clear recommendation and measurable outcomes.
Think roles, not just packages
MBA IT jobs, salary & career growth.
Your outcome depends on the institute, prior experience, technical fluency, internship, role and hiring market. SICSR lists business analyst, IT management consultant and product manager among potential career directions; eligibility for a specific job still depends on the employer. [4]
Translate stakeholder needs into requirements, process maps, user stories and acceptance criteria.
Support process analysis, system implementation, testing and change adoption.
Track product metrics, investigate user problems and support prioritisation and launches.
Support controls testing, information-security governance and risk documentation.
Coordinate budgets, scope, dependencies and delivery across technical and business teams.
Oversee systems, vendors, service quality, controls and business continuity.
Learn the domain, support delivery and build evidence of business impact.
Take responsibility for projects, products, budgets or specialist teams.
Senior leadership paths requiring substantial experience—not immediate graduate roles.
What salary should you expect?
There is no verified single salary figure that represents every MBA IT graduate. Compare the latest programme-specific median and average CTC, the number of students placed, eligible batch size and role mix. A campus-wide highest package is not a typical MBA IT outcome.
Where to look for opportunities
Research IT services and consulting, enterprise-software firms, banks and fintechs, e-commerce, product companies and in-house digital teams. The original guide names Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta (formerly Facebook), Accenture and IBM; these are employers to research, not a verified current recruiter list for either featured programme. [8]
Before shortlisting a college, ask for the exact companies and roles that recruited from your target programme in the latest completed placement cycle.
Choose how you study
Full-time, online or executive?
Choose the format around your experience, schedule and career goals—not only the advertised fee. A programme being called an “MBA” does not establish its recognition or the exact specialisation awarded.
| Mode | Who should explore it? | Check before joining |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time campus MBA | Graduates and career-switchers seeking immersive study, internships and campus access. | Academic fee, residential requirements, programme-specific placements and internship support. |
| Online / ODL MBA | Learners balancing work or location constraints with postgraduate study. | Exact university, programme, mode and academic-session recognition / entitlement on UGC-DEB. Confirm how the IT focus appears on the credential. |
| Executive / working-professional | Experienced professionals seeking management progression alongside or after work. | Minimum work experience, timetable, degree vs diploma vs certificate, duration and placement access. |
Make an informed choice
MBA IT vs PGDM vs MCA.
Compare the qualification and actual curriculum, not a blanket “theory versus practical” label. A full-time PGDM is not exclusively for working professionals, and both MBA and PGDM programmes can use projects, internships and case studies.
| Compare | MBA IT / ITBM | PGDM with IT focus | MCA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Master’s degree | Postgraduate diploma | Master’s degree in computer applications |
| Primary emphasis | Management + technology decisions | Management; IT / analytics depth depends on the programme | Computing, software and technical applications |
| Typical full-time duration | 2 years | Often 2 years; verify the exact award | Commonly 2 years; verify university rules |
| Best-fit direction | Business analysis, IT consulting, digital management | Similar management roles if curriculum and outcomes align | Software development and technical computing roles |
| What to verify | Degree-awarding authority, programme, mode and specialisation | Applicable AICTE approval; AIU equivalence if needed for further study | Mathematics prerequisites, eligibility and technical curriculum |
Your questions, answered
MBA in Information Technology FAQs.
Can a non-engineer do an MBA in IT?
Yes. SCIT and SICSR state graduation from a recognised university / Institution of National Importance, rather than an engineering-only degree requirement. Their published threshold is 50%, or 45% for SC/ST applicants. Non-engineers should still build quantitative and IT fundamentals. [1][3]
What are the MBA IT fees for 2026–28?
The two featured official academic-fee examples are ₹11.40 lakh at SICSR for MBA IT and ₹15.60 lakh at SCIT for MBA ITBM. These are two-year Indian-student academic totals, calculated from four instalments, excluding deposits, accommodation, meals and other applicable costs. They are not a national fee range or a confirmed 2027–29 quote. [1][2]
Is CAT compulsory for an MBA in Information Technology?
No single entrance exam applies to all MBA IT programmes. SCIT requires SNAP and institute registration. Other colleges may use CAT, XAT, NMAT, CMAT, MAT or their own published route. Check the exact programme before paying an exam or application fee. [1]
Can I get direct admission without an entrance exam?
Only where a university or institute explicitly permits a merit-based or other lawful route under its published policy. Do not assume a management quota bypasses minimum eligibility or an institute’s mandatory entrance test. SCIT’s published route requires SNAP. Avoid guaranteed-seat claims. [1]
Do I need coding skills before joining?
Coding is not listed as a universal admission requirement in the eligibility pages cited here. However, technical fluency is valuable. Learn spreadsheets, basic SQL, data interpretation and how IT systems work; check whether your intended electives or roles require programming. [1][3]
What is the average salary after MBA IT?
There is no single reliable average for all colleges, roles and experience levels. Ask for the latest programme-specific median and average CTC, placement participation and role-wise outcomes. Do not equate CTC with take-home pay or an advertised highest package with a likely offer.
Is an online or distance MBA IT valid?
Validity depends on the degree-awarding institution, exact programme, mode and academic-session recognition / entitlement—not just the name on an advertisement. Check UGC-DEB and the university’s official programme documents before enrolling. [5]
Does MBA IT lead directly to a CIO or CTO role?
No. CIO, CTO and IT director are senior leadership positions that usually require substantial professional experience, demonstrated delivery and organisational leadership. Analyst, associate consulting and product-related support roles are more realistic paths to explore early in a career.
Should I apply for the 2026 or 2027 intake now?
Keep the exam year, admission year and published fee batch separate. As checked on 28 September 2026, SCIT’s admission calendar lists a June 2027 commencement, while the cited fees are for 2026–28. Confirm current deadlines, seats and the appropriate fee schedule directly with each institute. [1]
