A Closer Look at JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced 2027 is a national entrance exam for engineering, and it is used to gain admission to undergraduate courses such as B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch, BS and dual-degree programmes at the IITs and at other institutions that take part in the exam. In order to take it, candidates have to first pass JEE Main 2027 and also meet the eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced. What will JEE Advanced be in 2027?

JEE Advanced constitutes the second phase of India’s Joint Entrance Examination system and is held every year by one of the seven zonal IITs in rotation.

What is JEE Advanced?

It is the exam taken in order to gain admission to bachelor’s degree programmes in the fields of science and engineering at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). There are 18,160 undergraduate places in engineering and science at all 23 of the IITs, and admission is achieved via JEE Advanced. Some universities outside India, such as the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore, also take into account the scores obtained in JEE Advanced when making admissions decisions.

The JEE Advanced exam is arranged by one of the seven zonal IITs with the guidance of the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB). It assesses the skills and knowledge of the candidates in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The total marks for JEE Advanced, the number of questions and the marking scheme are not set and vary according to the institute responsible for organising the exam.

Only candidates who pass the JEE Main and who are among the top 2.5 lakh in the merit order are allowed to take the JEE Advanced; each year about 1.8 lakh candidates sit for the exam and on average 18 per cent of them qualify, which makes it one of the most difficult exams in the world.

Any Indian citizen who wishes to apply for the IIT JEE Advanced must achieve a score above the JEE Main 2026 cutoff percentile. In order to be eligible for the JEE Advanced exam, candidates must not only meet the NTA JEE cutoff requirement but also satisfy the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria for 2026 regarding age, the number of attempts, and the year in which they passed their Class 12 board exams. Foreign nationals, on the other hand, are exempt from taking the NTA JEE Main and can apply directly for JEE Advanced.

Who is eligible to take the JEE Advanced?

A candidate is eligible for JEE Advanced if:

They are within the top 250,000 candidates taking the JEE Main Paper 1 (BE/BTech).
They meet the criteria for the age limit required for JEE Advanced.
They still have two attempts left. Anyone who is uncertain about the number of attempts available for JEE Advanced should know that they are allowed to take the exam twice in two consecutive years, starting from the year in which they pass their Class 12.
An application for First Class 12 in either the current year or the previous year.
Was not admitted to IIT previously.

1) Login using JEE Main 2026 Details

JEE Main qualified candidates have to register using their JEE Main application number and password.
After login, instructions to fill the JEE Advanced application form will be mentioned. Read them carefully.

2) Fill JEE Advanced Form 2026

Upon reading all the instructions, candidates can proceed to fill the JEE Advanced form. All personal and academic details will be fetched from the NTA JEE Main database. However, candidates will be required to add some additional details like educational qualification, test city preference, etc for JEE Advanced.

3) Upload Scanned Documents

Next, candidates have to upload all scanned documents. The list of all necessary documents required for uploading is given here. Also, all the documents must be scanned as per the specifications mentioned in the information brochure.

Ques. What about the 75% board marks vs. Top 20 Percentile?

Ans. For admission through JEE Advanced in an IIT, you must meet either of these criteria:

75% Board Marks: You must secure at least 75% aggregate marks in your Class 12 (or equivalent) board exam for General/EWS/OBC and 65% for SC/ST candidates.
Top 20 Percentile in Board: If you are unable to meet the 75% criteria, then you can still be eligible if you fall in the top 20th percentile of successful candidates in your Class 12 board.

Ques. If I am a dropper (did not qualify last year / didn’t register), can I still register now?

Ans. Yes, if you are a dropper and you did not qualify for the JEE Advanced in the previous years or chose not to register, you can still register for JEE Advanced 2026:

You must have appeared for the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2024 or 2025.
You must have qualified for JEE Main 2026 and be among the top 2,50,000 candidates (across all categories).
You should have been born on or after October 1, 2000 (or October 1, 1995 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates).
