Introduction to GATE 2027

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 is a national-level entrance examination used to assess candidates’ understanding of undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts and Humanities. GATE 2027 is being organised by IIT Madras on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. 

A valid GATE score can be used for admission to various Master’s, direct doctoral and doctoral programmes in institutions supported by the Ministry of Education and other government agencies. Qualifying candidates may also be eligible for financial assistance, subject to the rules of the admitting institute and applicable scholarship guidelines. The GATE 2027 schedule has been officially announced by IIT Madras. Candidates should note that the organising institute states that dates are liable to change. 

GATE 2027 Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility rules for GATE 2027 have been expanded to include students from several undergraduate disciplines. A candidate currently studying in the third year or higher year of a government-approved undergraduate programme in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities can appear for GATE 2027. Graduates who have already completed an eligible degree can also apply. 

GATE 2027 Test Papers and Paper Codes

GATE 2027 will be conducted for 30 test papers. Candidates can select one paper or up to two papers from the permitted combinations. The new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper has been introduced for GATE 2027. 

GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and Question Paper Structure

The GATE 2027 examination is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. Each paper contains 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. General Aptitude is common to all papers and carries 15 marks. The remaining 85 marks are based on the selected test paper.

The marks assigned to individual questions can be one or two marks depending on the question.

• MCQ questions carry negative marking for incorrect answers.
• There is no negative marking for wrong MSQ answers.
• There is no negative marking for wrong NAT answers.
• MSQ questions do not provide partial marks.
• NAT questions require candidates to enter a numerical value.
• The total paper is of 100 marks.

GATE 2027 Syllabus – Subjects and Preparation Areas

GATE 2027 has revised syllabi for its test papers. The syllabus depends on the paper selected by the candidate. Therefore, students should download the latest official syllabus for their particular paper instead of relying only on older GATE preparation material. 

General Aptitude Syllabus

The General Aptitude section is common to all GATE papers and tests language and analytical abilities.

Subject-Specific Syllabus

The remaining 85 marks are based on the selected GATE paper. For example, a candidate appearing for Computer Science and Information Technology needs to prepare topics from the official CS syllabus, while a Mechanical Engineering candidate follows the ME syllabus.

GATE 2027 Registration Process Through GOAPS

Candidates can complete the GATE 2027 application online through the official application system. The registration portal opens on 14 August 2026 and regular registration closes on 21 September 2026. 

Candidates selecting two papers must choose from the officially allowed combinations and should use one application form, rather than submitting separate applications. 

GATE 2027 Application Fee

The GATE 2027 application fee is charged per paper. The fee is higher during the extended registration period because of the late fee. 

Candidates appearing for two papers have to pay twice the applicable single-paper fee. Additional service, processing or bank charges may also apply. 

Documents Required for GATE 2027 Registration

Candidates should keep the required information and documents ready before starting the online application. The exact requirements depend on the candidate’s category and qualification.

For SC/ST/PwD candidates claiming the applicable application-fee concession, the relevant category certificate is required. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates do not need to upload the category certificate during the GATE application process. 

How to Download GATE 2027 Admit Card

The GATE 2027 website currently lists 4 January 2027 as the examination-city notification date, while the admit-card download date is to be announced. 

Once the admit card becomes available, candidates can generally follow these steps:

2. Open the GOAPS/application portal.
3. Log in using the registered credentials.
4. Go to the admit-card section.

GATE 2027 Exam Mode and Examination Centres

GATE 2027 will be conducted in computer-based test mode. Unlike some earlier years, GATE 2027 will have no international examination centres. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad can appear for GATE 2027, but they must select an examination city within India and make their own travel arrangements. 

Candidates are required to provide examination-city preferences during registration. The GATE committee may allot a different city due to operational constraints.

GATE 2027 Score and Scorecard Validity

A GATE 2027 scorecard is valid for three years from the date of announcement of the results. The official website states that the scorecard is issued to candidates who secure marks at or above the qualifying marks applicable to the SC/ST/PwD category for that paper. 

The GATE 2027 result is scheduled to be announced on 19 March 2027. 

What Can You Do After Qualifying GATE 2027?

GATE qualification can open several academic and career pathways, although qualifying by itself does not guarantee admission, scholarship or employment.
