Oil & Gas Management and Energy & Infrastructure Management are related but differently titled programmes. Fees and entry requirements are not interchangeable across modes. [1][2][4]

Understand the business of energy

What is an MBA in Oil & Gas Management?

01

An MBA in Oil & Gas Management combines core business education with knowledge of the petroleum and natural-gas value chain. It focuses on commercial decisions, energy economics, marketing, procurement, logistics, project finance, risk and strategy—not just the science of extracting oil.

The specialisation can suit graduates exploring energy-sector business roles and experienced professionals seeking stronger management skills. A good programme also examines environmental responsibilities, digitalisation and the changing energy mix.

01 / UPSTREAM

Explore & produce

Understand exploration and production economics, investment decisions, contracts and commercial risk.

02 / MIDSTREAM

Move & store

Study pipelines, shipping, terminals, storage, LNG logistics and the coordination of supply networks.

03 / DOWNSTREAM

Refine & market

Explore refining, petrochemicals, product distribution, petroleum retailing and customer markets.

Course highlightsWhat to know
QualificationPostgraduate Master of Business Administration. Related energy MBAs may have different award titles and curricula.
DurationUPES Online lists 24 months. PDEU’s related MBA is two years with six trimesters. [2][4]
Academic backgroundA recognised bachelor’s qualification is the usual entry route. Any-stream eligibility does not remove programme-specific marks or other conditions.
Learning modesCampus and online options should be compared separately. Teaching, field exposure, assessment, timetable and career services differ.
Core themesManagement, energy economics, oil and gas business, logistics, risk, sustainability and strategic planning.
FeesUse a programme- and mode-specific fee schedule, not one national range or a generic per-semester advertisement.
A management degree is not an engineering qualification. Petroleum engineering, geophysics, process engineering and safety-critical technical posts can require separate qualifications, certifications and experience.

Start with the right requirements

MBA Oil & Gas Management eligibility.

02

Check the specific university, study mode and intake. Campus criteria must not be applied automatically to an online programme—or vice versa.

ProgrammeReviewed academic starting pointWhat to verify
UPES · campus MBA Oil & GasMinimum 50% in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation, in any stream. [1]Degree recognition, current selection route, final-year conditions and documentary proof.
UPES Online · MBA Oil & GasThe programme page displays graduation with 50% marks, with an asterisk. [2]Request the full current eligibility policy. This guide does not assume that experience or category automatically reduces the threshold.
PDEU · MBA Energy & InfrastructureIndian-national route: a recognised bachelor’s degree of at least three years, with 50% aggregate; 45% for SC/ST. [4]Entrance scores and selection still apply. The separate final-year paragraph says 50%; SC/ST final-year applicants below 50% should clarify this wording in writing.
Do not confuse “preferred” with “required”. The original page’s general wording is replaced here with published programme-specific criteria. Recognition, grade conversion and final-document checks remain the university’s responsibility.

Check your academic starting point

A local self-check for bachelor’s-degree applicants—not an official eligibility or admission decision. No personal contact details required.

Inputs remain on this page and are not stored or transmitted. International, professional-qualification and unusual equivalence cases need an individual policy check.

Plan before you apply

Admission process & entrance-test routes.

03

First choose the learning mode and exact programme. Then check its live admission notice, accepted exam years, application instructions and document deadlines. A course page’s “Apply” button alone does not establish that a particular intake is still open.

01 · Compare the right routes

Check award title, campus versus online delivery, curriculum, practical exposure and career support.

02 · Verify your documents

Prepare degree records, mark sheets, scorecards and applicable category or experience evidence.

03 · Apply and prepare

Complete the university’s own application and any assessment or interview it specifies.

04 · Read the offer

Confirm all charges, refund terms, recognition, timetable and final-document conditions before acceptance.

Planning for 2027? The fees in this guide are current reviewed examples, including the UPES Online 2026–27 handbook—not confirmed 2027 admission or fee promises. Use official new-intake notices when released.

What to prepare for an energy-management interview

Be ready to explain why you want this specialisation, how the oil and gas value chain works, and a business issue such as price volatility, LNG logistics, city-gas distribution or emissions management. Discuss trade-offs and evidence rather than memorising a single price forecast.

Updated from the original page: ₹55,000 per semester is not used as the current online fee. UPES Online’s 2026–27 handbook now lists ₹2,39,999. An EMI headline is a financing arrangement, not the total programme price. [3]

Plan your full education budget

Use a published starting point or your own written quote. Monthly costs and extras are editable assumptions, not a university invoice.

Estimated total cash budget · 24 months₹2,73,999

Online default: ₹1,000/month and ₹10,000 extras are illustrative. Count only study-related additional costs; do not count optional immersion twice. Excludes loan interest and lost earnings. Not all costs are due upfront.

Scholarships, instalments and refunds

MBA Oil & Gas Management syllabus.

06

Expect management foundations followed by sector-specific subjects and applied work. The semester explorer below summarises the current UPES Online course page; it is not a syllabus shared by every university. Suggested projects are our editorial learning ideas, not official assessment tasks. [2]

Semester 1 · Management foundations

  • Managerial Economics
  • Accounting for Managers
  • Marketing Management
  • Quantitative Techniques for Managers
  • Operations Management

Suggested practice: Build a simple fuel-distribution cost model and explain its assumptions.

Semester 2 · People, finance & decisions

  • Organisational Behaviour & Human Resource Management
  • Business Analytics for Managers
  • Project Management
  • Financial Management
  • Research Methodology

Suggested practice: Compare an energy project under alternative price, demand and financing scenarios.

Semester 3 · Oil & gas domain knowledge

  • Oil & Gas Storage & Transportation
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Understanding Natural Gas Business
  • Fundamentals of Refining & Petro Chemical Business
  • Fundamentals of Petroleum Exploration & its Economics

Suggested practice: Map an LNG or petroleum-product supply chain and identify its commercial risks.

Semester 4 · Strategy & integration

  • Strategic Management
  • International Business
  • Petro Retailing Business
  • New and Alternative Energy Resources
  • Dissertation

Suggested practice: Present a strategy case with market evidence, financial implications and an environmental-risk discussion.

What changes in the campus curriculum?

UPES’s campus page also lists industrial visits, a summer internship, petro-economics and crude-oil planning, petroleum-project finance, ESG, and electives in areas such as energy derivatives or advanced IT applications. Its programme page links Petroleum Marketing & Business Development, Natural Gas Business and Energy Trading options. Confirm availability for your intake. [1]

PDEU uses six trimesters and a broader Energy & Infrastructure framework, so compare its own course structure rather than applying this four-semester online map. [4]

A changing energy landscape

Skills for energy markets—and the transition.

07

A useful programme should help you evaluate both today’s hydrocarbon business and the risks and opportunities of a changing energy system. Look for balanced analysis rather than promises of uninterrupted growth or guaranteed green jobs.

Commercial & financial analysis

Understand cost structures, cash flows, working capital, project valuation and sensitivity to price or exchange-rate changes.

Logistics & procurement

Analyse supplier contracts, transportation choices, inventory, terminal capacity and the reliability of supply networks.

Risk, regulation & safety culture

Recognise commercial, compliance and operational risks. Work with qualified legal, engineering and safety specialists rather than replacing them.

Digital decision-making

Use spreadsheets, dashboards and appropriate analytics. Understand where enterprise and operational data come from and their limitations.

Stakeholder communication

Explain a recommendation to technical, commercial and policy audiences. Negotiate responsibly and document assumptions.

Energy-transition literacy

Evaluate efficiency, methane and emissions management, alternative fuels and low-carbon investment through credible business cases.

Curriculum context: UPES campus lists digital tools, ESG and alternative energy; the online syllabus includes business analytics and new/alternative energy resources. These are reasons to inspect practical assessments—not evidence of a separate certification in every technology. [1][2]

Know the boundary of the qualification. Learning about HSE, network planning or energy assets does not authorise a graduate to perform safety-critical engineering, certify compliance or operate industrial systems. Those roles depend on the employer’s technical and regulatory requirements.

Match the role to your experience

Jobs, salary & career progression.

08

The original guide’s career themes—energy analysis, consulting, ESG, business development, transport, procurement, operations and projects—remain relevant areas to explore. Job level depends on your prior experience and role-specific capability. An MBA is not a shortcut directly to a plant-head or project-director position.

Career directionTypical business workWhat to build
Energy / commercial analystAnalyse market information, demand, pricing and project economics.Quantitative reasoning, spreadsheets, sector knowledge and concise business writing.
Procurement / supply-chain analystCompare vendors, contracts, inventories and logistics options.Cost analysis, supplier evaluation, negotiation and risk awareness.
Business development / marketingResearch customer needs, support sales proposals and evaluate new markets.Commercial communication, market research and petroleum / gas-sector context.
Project coordinator / project financeTrack schedules, budgets, contracts and investment assumptions.Project controls, financial modelling and cross-functional coordination.
Energy / regulatory / ESG consultingSupport research, reporting and recommendations within a specialist team.Policy literacy, evidence quality, data handling and additional expertise where needed.
Operations, distribution or project managementCoordinate teams and delivery within a specific business function.Relevant operating experience, employer-specific training and demonstrated leadership.
Salary: do not treat a headline range as a promise. No verified national, programme-specific salary average is asserted here. Pay varies by campus or online route, prior experience, role, employer, location and the energy investment cycle.
ASK FOR THE TYPICAL OUTCOMEMedian + role mix

Request a dated report for your exact programme, mode and graduating cohort.

COMPARE THE SAME PAY BASISFixed pay ≠ CTC

Check variable pay, benefits, location and any retention or joining components.

How to read placement information

PDEU’s public placement page reports school-level MBA outcomes rather than a separately verified Oil & Gas-only dataset. Its 2023–25 sections also show differing average-salary figures, so this guide does not repeat either as a reliable programme-specific average. Ask the placement office for a consistent report and its denominator. [9]

UPES Online describes resume support, interview preparation and networking. That is career assistance, not guaranteed placement, and campus outcomes should not be represented as online-student outcomes. [2]

What about PSU or technical roles?

An MBA does not guarantee recruitment by ONGC or any other public-sector employer. Each vacancy has its own qualification, examination, experience and selection conditions. Petroleum engineer, geophysicist, drilling specialist and technical HSE roles may require qualifications beyond this MBA.

Choose a format you can sustain

Duration and flexibility at UPES Online

The 2026–27 handbook gives the MBA a minimum duration of two years and maximum of four years. It also discusses extensions subject to approval. This does not support a promise that students can finish the MBA in less than two years. The original page’s unverified “fast-track” suggestion has therefore been removed. [3]

Learning materials and assessment

The handbook describes self-paced learning materials and live weekend classes. Check the current LMS access, e-library, recorded sessions, assignments, examination platform and technical requirements. Do not assume “online” means no deadlines, no exams or unlimited completion time. [3]

Verify recognition before paying. NAAC accreditation or a university’s reputation alone does not establish entitlement for every online programme and session. Check the UGC-DEB record and ask the university to confirm the exact award and admission session. [6]

Other education routes

A BBA is an undergraduate route, while an MBA is postgraduate management study. MSc or MTech energy/petroleum courses can have scientific or technical entry requirements and a different purpose. A short oil-and-gas certificate can support upskilling but is not an MBA degree. Compare the actual award, prerequisites and career objective—not only a similar course name.

Make your learning visible

Build an energy-business portfolio.

10

Use one well-researched project to show how you connect industry context with business judgment. These suggested activities are preparation ideas, not compulsory admissions requirements.

Use safe, permitted information. Do not publish confidential contracts, facility layouts, operational vulnerabilities or employer data. Treat student work as commercial analysis, not an instruction to operate real industrial equipment.

Answers before you apply

MBA Oil & Gas Management FAQs.

11
How long is an MBA in Oil and Gas Management?

UPES Online lists a 24-month programme, and its 2026–27 handbook specifies a two-year minimum and four-year maximum MBA duration. Campus and related energy programmes have their own structures; PDEU uses six trimesters over two years. [2][3][4]

Can graduates from non-engineering backgrounds apply?

UPES campus lists graduation in any stream with 50% in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation. Other routes have their own criteria. Any-stream entry does not mean the MBA qualifies you for engineering or geophysics jobs. [1]

Is work experience compulsory for the online MBA?

The reviewed UPES Online programme page displays graduation with 50% marks and does not establish a universal work-experience requirement. Obtain the complete current policy, particularly if you seek an experience-based relaxation. Do not assume an older or third-party rule applies to your intake. [2]

Is the UPES Online fee still ₹55,000 per semester?

The newer 2026–27 handbook lists ₹2,39,999 for MBA Oil and Gas Management. It says the fee includes optional immersion, whose fee becomes non-refundable and non-transferable once registered. Confirm current instalments, inclusions and any opt-out pricing directly. [3]

Does the online programme use the campus syllabus?

Not exactly. The official pages show different semester structures and learning activities. The syllabus explorer here summarises the online course page; campus additions are described separately. [1][2]

Which entrance exams should I prepare for?

UPES campus lists UPESMET / national-level tests / CUET and interview selection; confirm the current list and valid test years. PDEU’s reviewed eligibility tab names CAT, XAT, NMAT and GMAT. Online requirements must be checked separately. [1][4]

Are IIPE and IIT Delhi verified colleges for this exact MBA?

Not from the official programme lists reviewed. IIPE’s academics page lists technical/science routes, and IIT Delhi DMS lists other MBA formats. This guide does not repeat the original claim that they offer a dedicated MBA in Oil and Gas Management. [7][8]

Is Energy and Infrastructure Management the same specialisation?

It is a related but broader field. PDEU’s programme has that exact title and covers energy and infrastructure; it is not presented here as an identically named Oil & Gas MBA. Compare the actual subjects and career support. [4]

What salary will I receive after the MBA?

No salary is guaranteed. Ask for a dated report for the exact programme and mode, with median and average pay, role mix and placement participation. Campus and online outcomes are not interchangeable, and prior experience can substantially change the result.

Can this degree help me move into renewables or ESG?

It can contribute relevant business knowledge if the curriculum and your projects address those areas. A move depends on role-specific skills, experience and employer requirements; it is not an automatic transition into every renewable-energy or ESG job.

Is an online degree automatically accepted everywhere?

Check the exact UGC-DEB entitlement for your session and mode. Employers, universities, regulators and overseas evaluators may have additional requirements; a blanket worldwide-acceptance promise is not appropriate. [6]

Can I complete the MBA through a fast-track route?

The reviewed UPES Online handbook sets the MBA minimum at two years. No verified shorter completion option is promised here. Ask the university about formal credit and duration rules rather than relying on advertising. [3]

Does counseling guarantee admission or a job?

No. Counseling can support comparison and application planning. Universities make admission and scholarship decisions; employers make recruitment decisions. Career assistance is not a placement guarantee.
