In the 1980s, there were very few engineering colleges in Maharashtra, making quality engineering education inaccessible to many. During this period, our founder, Shri Rajkumarjee Agarwal, collaborated with two like-minded educational officers, Shri V.V. Chiplunkar Sir and Shri Sarnobat Sir. Together, they conceived the idea of Vishwakarma Institute of Technology. The name Vishwakarma was inspired by the eponymous divine engineer from Indian mythology, who is known to have engineered the world.

ToggleDriven by the vision of quality education for all, VIT, Pune, was launched on 1 September 1983. The institute started operations from a small building – Shri Mangal building in a busy marketplace of Pune. Theory classes were held in a school nearby, New English School. The institute was even ridiculed by a newspaper for such an arrangement. But in 1987, it moved to its current Bibwewadi campus- and the rest, as they say, is history. In 2008, VIT Pune became the first private, self-financed autonomous engineering college in Maharashtra state.
